This family recipe came to me through Lucretia Warren about 30 years ago. They are undoubtedly the best Molasses Cookies!
Molasses Cookies
3/4 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1/4 cup molasses
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
Cream butter; add sugar, egg, and molasses, beating after each addition.
Add flour, spices, and salt; mix thoroughly.
Chill dough for 1 hour. Form into balls; roll balls in granulated sugar, and place on greased cookie sheet.
Bake in 375-degree oven until brown and top begins to crack, about 8-10 minutes.
Store in sealed container to keep cookies slightly moist.
Yield: About 3 dozen cookies.
